This is a list of suggested questions that may be used when
interviewing someone about their family history. Sometimes an oral interview works especially well with an older member of the family. You can, of course, add or subtract questions to suit your particular family or cultural background. I recommend that you take a tape recorder and record the answers to these questions. That way you can concentrate on the answers and not on taking notes. Then, too, with a tape recorder, you'll have a recording of the person's voice for others to hear who may not have the privilege of meeting the one you interview. You can also later transcribe the answers to your questions more accurately. Do, of course, ask the person you're interviewing for permission to use the tape recorder. And test the tape recorder for a short time so you'll be sure it works, and so the person being recorded can become comfortable with it. (Always remember to take extra batteries, too. They seem to fail at the most inconvenient times.) |
